The Role Preparation Canvas

The Role Preparation Canvas helps actors to prepare roles and monolouges.

It can be used to practice for auditions for acting schools, as well as actual plays and scenes.

Obviously, acting is a very indiviual and emotional art form, and can not be “standardized” or “put into a template”. However, this Canvas can aide you as a starting point for your role preparation journey, and helps you think about all the different important aspects (e.g. motivation, objective, movement, speech) when preparing a role.

The Canvas is built upon the popular acting theories of Stanislavski and Meisner, and guides you step by step through their acting techniques.

Furthermore, the Canvas includes some helpful exercises you can use to get into the role, the emotional state, and into the moment of the scene.

The Role Preparation Canvas was build in cooperation with acting coaches, working actors, and acting students. Thereby, it includes a variety of perspectives and exercises, and can help most actors with at least one or two suggestions. We hope it can help you too!! My name is Sven Adams, and I am a passionate actor from Germany.

During my journey to learn acting, I visited countless acting workshops in the United States and Asia. Throughout this time, I collected the most important learnings from my coaches in what I called a “Template for Role Preparation”: The Role Preparation Canvas.

This Canvas contains all the most important exercises and pieces of advice that helped me successfully pass multiple auditions by now.

After I finished developing the Canvas, I could have said “Great, that’s it! The struggle is behind me.” Instead, I decided to give back to the great community of “acting dreamers”, and publish my Canvas for free.

This way, you can benefit from the work I had to do, and might save 1 or 2 years of traveling 😉

Knowledge should be freely available to everyone, especially when it comes to the arts. If you want to support the canvas, you can pay by giving feedback. This way, the Canvas will get better for everyone!

This has two main reasons:

1. The Canvas is still constantly being updated with new exercises & ideas from coaches. Having two different languages and two versions to update would increase the effort immensely. Furthermore, most acting techniques like the one from Meisner were originally created in English, so it makes sense to keep the terminology and concepts in their original language for now.
2. The Canvas should be available and understandable for international students. After all, acting should be an international art form, and knowledge shouldn’t be limited to one language. Keeping the Canvas in English opens it up to a much larger community of people that can benefit from it.

However: If you deeply feel like you need a German version for better understanding,  please let us know by submitting your feedback.
